Karter Hall

Semi Psychotic, sociopath, paranoid addict who holds grudges. Karter Hall. A man who is homeless by choice and becomes an officer for revenge. Karter Hall is a unique individual who lives by his own rules. The most interesting and complicated role that I have played to date. Complicated in a good way of course. Karter is misunderstood and if I was not careful, his actions could be perceived as villanesque. I had to make sense of Karter’s actions to create validation on his behalf. I had to make sure the audience knew why Karter values retaliation, why his pain is so present, and why he no longer wants to feel. I had to show his fight and his struggle. It’s a thin line between hero and villain with Karter Hall, and this is why my choices were so important. Without accurately studying and discovering Karter, the man, it is easy to misrepresent him; he’s loving, although he hates, confident although he is quiet, intelligent although he’s homeless, and he is brave although he is bullied. He is human. Karter’s personality contradicts his actions. Another reason this role was the most complicated, is because he is a man of few words. Through the majority of the film, Karter’s conversation included no dialogue. Every thought that he had, I presented without speaking a word- forcing myself to be vulnerable and expressive. I spoke Karter’s heart with my mouth closed, pushing me to be extremely aware, which I believe improved my skills as an actor. Karter and I are total opposites; our demeanors, our beliefs, our levels of communication, and our lifestyle choices are all different. I had to learn to live Karter’s life and present it in an honest account. I became someone different from myself; as I jumped into this unfamiliar life. Special thanks to Karter Hall because through his struggles, I struggled, and with the struggle, I became a better actor.
